My First Time!
  By Ingrid Carlsen
I have found a new passion.  And it started from a gift certificate!

My landlady in Tacoma gave me a gift certificate for Edgeworks Climbing Gym for Christmas last year. I was excited, because my good friend, Jewels, was a climber and she loved it.
I had met Jewels' friend, Jojo a few times (nice guy) and Jewels had said, "If you want to learn to climb, Jojo's a GREAT teacher!" Well, I knew this because we had all gone snowboarding in January with Brooke, Tod and JB. The boys taught us girls, and I had been paired up with Jojo. He indeed was a great teacher (and a fun one too I noted)!

After the insanity of school and graduation was finished, I finally called Jojo up and asked if he'd help me redeem my gift certificate. Well, it just so happened that a bunch of people were going camping and climbing at Smith Rocks, in Central Oregon. I was invited along, and since I don't like to miss any opportunities, I jumped at the chance to start climbing on natural rock.
  It was amazing!
I had to borrow everyone's gear, but I had an AWESOME time! I never knew that climbing was so amazing! First of all, the people I went with were incredibly warm and welcoming with me, and very encouraging while I was struggling my way up the rock faces. I learned that climbers have this amazing language. They use words like, crimp and jug to describe hand holds. And I learned the meaning of smear, toe up, and use your core! I don't think I have a core yet, but I'm working on it. I learned what it meant to be pumped after my first climb. I did my first multi-pitch that weekend, and I felt like I was literally on top of the world! I can use quick draws and daisy chains now (and I'm not actually referring to botanical daisy chains!)

Oh but besides the great feeling of accomplishment when you look down after you've reached the top (or look back up after you've reached the bottom again), I've been amazed at the sense of community I have felt just from that one weekend. When you're hiking to your next climbing spot, the people going past you always say hi, (and sometimes you already know them from a previous climbing excursion). When you're sharing a wall, it's easy to make friends because everyone has this common thread running through them. If it's not climbing, then it's the outdoors in general. Equipment, beer, and homes are shared with new friends that you may never even see again.

And that's another thing. I felt gorgeous out there. The climbers I met were admired for their strength, skill, and personality. Everyone was beautiful in the natural sunlight and sweat of Central Oregon.
Yes, I like climbing. Since that trip, I've accepted every invitation I've gotten to climb since (when I'm better, and have more equipment, I'll afford to be the initiator; for now I'll settle for being the invitee). I know I still have A LOT to learn, but I'm looking forward to it; it's fun, beautiful, and I've met some really great people. This strange world of dirt, bruises, balance and strength has welcomed me with open arms. ~Ingrid
