Native Americans once called this peak Takobia (Dakobed) which would translate to “The Great Parent”. One of 5 volcanoes in Washington and the only true wilderness volcano in the state, Glacier Peak offers a unique experience to the adventurous climber as the most isolated of Washington’s volcanoes.
Eleven significant glaciers remain active on the mountain, and the position of the relatively small volcanic cones gives it a prominence in the skyline as the 4th tallest peak in Washington state at 10,541 feet. Climbing this volcano requires a long and beautiful 14-mile approach through some very pristine wilderness, before reaching the remote alpine terrain.
